Magazine Spreads 2000-2008
Sensory Obscura
About the spread: “This is a five-page magazine spread I created for a class project. The magazine design could be based on any article of our choosing. I chose to use text from sci-fi writer Philip K. Dick’s novel A Scanner Darkly. The spreads recap the first chapter of the book and the imagery was inspired by the story.“
Thoughts: It may be the work of a student but nonetheless I think that it is very well done and and it caught my eye right away by the unconventional look of the spreads. I really like the collage effect of various textures, images and type.
Leah Budin
About the spread: ” Problem: Create a fashion spread for a high-end fashion magazine like Vogue or Harper’s Bazaar. Integrate typography with original photography. Solution: These spreads focus on a fictional “Armani machine-washable dress.” The first spread uses type to complete her form; the second uses type to continue the illusion of tassels. I put the model in a dryer in a laundromat to acheive the second spread’s circles. Click on her for the second spread. “
Thoughts: Very eye catching design though clearly this spread would only be appropriate for the two pages right in the middle of a magazine which would therefore allow for the image in the centre of the pages while still maintaining visual legibility. It’s not the most brilliant of spreads but I liked the idea of having half an image echoed by the other half represented through type. The type half doesn’t balance the image half properly I think. It would have been nicer if the transition from image to text was much smoother. Perhaps a few more variations of this spread and developing the visuals more would get things sorted. This spread reminded me a bit of the movie poster for the film “27 dresses” which is based around a similar concept of text completing an image, but it is executed much more effectively.
FYI Publication
About the spread: “Spreads from FYI, a publication for employees and shareholders.”
Thoughts: Very formal and serious right from the first glance. The text is presented in such as way that it actually seems to mimic the structure and appearance of the skyscraper building in the background….which is why I chose this spread, for its use of font and text organization.
