Examples of Spreads:

Magazine Spreads 2000-2008

Sensory Obscura

About the spread:This is a five-page magazine spread I created for a class project. The magazine design could be based on any article of our choosing. I chose to use text from sci-fi writer Philip K. Dick’s novel A Scanner Darkly. The spreads recap the first chapter of the book and the imagery was inspired by the story.

Thoughts: It may be the work of a student but nonetheless I think that it is very well done and and it caught my eye right away by the unconventional look of the spreads. I really like the collage effect of various textures, images and type.

Leah Budin

About the spread: ” Problem: Create a fashion spread for a high-end fashion magazine like Vogue or Harper’s Bazaar. Integrate typography with original photography. Solution: These spreads focus on a fictional “Armani machine-washable dress.” The first spread uses type to complete her form; the second uses type to continue the illusion of tassels. I put the model in a dryer in a laundromat to acheive the second spread’s circles. Click on her for the second spread. “

Thoughts: Very eye catching design though clearly this spread would only be appropriate for the two pages right in the middle of a magazine which would therefore allow for the image in the centre of the pages while still maintaining visual legibility. It’s not the most brilliant of spreads but I liked the idea of having half an image echoed by the other half represented through type. The type half doesn’t balance the image half properly I think. It would have been nicer if the transition from image to text was much smoother. Perhaps a few more variations of this spread and developing the visuals more would get things sorted. This spread reminded me a bit of the movie poster for the film “27 dresses” which is based around a similar concept of text completing an image, but it is executed much more effectively.

FYI Publication

About the spread:Spreads from FYI, a publication for employees and shareholders.”

Thoughts: Very formal and serious right from the first glance. The text is presented in such as way that it actually seems to mimic the structure and appearance of the skyscraper building in the background….which is why I chose this spread, for its use of font and text organization.

just go on google images and type in ‘magazine spreads’

Great Typography Animation March 30, 2008

This is a video I stumbled across on youtube whilst doing research for the previous project (Flash). I bookmarked it at the time thinking that at some point I would really need to learn about and understand typography. When we started learning about typography in this unit I immediately dug this up since I think beginner’s primer to typography.

This goes perfectly with the InDesign workshop on the 26th which covered leading, tracking and kerning…I had a hard time grasping these concepts since it was assumed during class that everyone was an expert in typography terms and knew what they were. I have never really studied typography before so this is my first chance to really learn about it, starting with the basics. In class we were supposed to depict visually what each of the three terms (leading, tracking and kerning) represented/meant. I failed at this rather miserably I think since for starters I had no clue what they were. I spent a good few minutes trying to look them up on the computer. But, the lovely oldschool mac I was using in our baseroom, as usual when needed the most, decided to freeze TWICE!!!!! Not only was it taking FOREVER to do anything but it froze….then I restarted it (obviously lost all the information I had found in the process of doing so…) and then when I had found all my research again it decided to freeze again before I could save it!!! Just a few minutes turned into more like half an hour! In the end I went to the mac room and found what I needed. Note to self: bring up issue of terrible macs in base room with someone who can do something about it!

The Elen Lupton site about typography will be really helpful as a resource for background information about typography…along with this video!
