InDesign Workshop 1 February 27, 2008

For the first InDesign workshop we had to fill in a sheet relating to the typographer we were doing….

InDesign Workshop Preparation 26.02.2008

1. Which typographer will you feature, and why?

Vince Frost

2. Which point from their Type Radio interview do you feel will be of most interest to other typographers and designers?

I might choose another part, it’s not set in stone at the moment. But, nonetheless two parts which I found most interesting were: a) how he compares different design studios and how they function b) his view on education, especially in the arts and visual communication.

3. Which magazine format would you like to use for your project, and why?

I will most likely use a format from Grafik magazine, which is very oriented towards typography and visual communication (from traditional to digital). Mainly because of the nature of the magazine, the fact that it allows variety of mediums and has dynamic layouts.

4. What kind of font/s will you be using, and why? (give a general answer rather than naming specific fonts)

Probably modern and sans serif fonts since those are most prevalent in Frost’s work.

5. What ‘look’ / ‘tone of voice’ will you give your project, and why?

Again, something quite modern and perhaps done as a bit of an imitation of one of Frost’s works….so maybe focus on one or two works which I like and take the ‘look’ / ‘tone of voice’ based on that work(s).

This is the result of the first InDesign session during which we were supposed to create a two page spread relating to the typographer of our choice. The images used are from the downloadeable “Frost Design Portfolio” from http://www.dhub.org/articles/155.
The site also contains an article relating to Vince Frost (check it out later and use as evidence of extra research).

Despite a rough start to the day with my lack of typography knowledge and the leading-tracking-kerning technical fiasco, I was surprised that this spread turned out so well. Darren and Kit both really liked it so that brightened my day a bit. So far the InDesign tutorials (well the first one so far) really have complemented the rest of the project since these types of experiments in InDesign will further my sketchbook work I think. This spread is definitely sketchbook worthy as a mock-up Vince Frost spread. This spread was based on the dimensions of a”Grafik” magazine layout. So perhaps create the final spread according to these dimensions? As if it was going into Grafik magazine…or perhaps Creative Review, I can always switch later if I find a certain magazine which I deem perfect for my spread….though yes I suppose that in the industry it wouldn’t work that way, you would have to create your page spreads according to the criteria and style of the magazine, not vice versa.
~ remember to upload the relevant hand-written stuff relating to this part of the project ~

Task: Typeradio is a webased radio station that presents interviews with designers working in the typographic industry. Choose one typographer. Listen to, and transcribe, the interview then represent the interview in the form of a double page spread supported with illustration/photography or just type. Your transcribed article should be between 500-750 words in length. The interview should be backed up by additional research and accompanied by either illustration/photographs generated by yourself that is representative of the typographer chosen.

List of typographers

So, to start off this project and to help me decide which typographer I will chose, I went and visited all their sites to get an idea of what they do. I am aware that this project is supposed to be about what they say in their interview, but, it is just so much easier and less time consuming to visiter their sites rather then listen to parts of all their interviews. By doing this I can also see what information is available about these typographers, which is rather important since the final result of the project should be well supported by various sources besides the interview. As I went along I mentally created a set of criteria in my head on how I would choose one typographer: availability of information on web and what their work is like. After looking up all the typographers I narrowed the list down to my top three choices:

Catherine Griffiths

Stefan Sagmeister

Vince Frost

At this point I went to the typeradio site and listened to parts of their interviews to be able to narrow down my selection even further to ONE typographer – Vince Frost.
